in its five years dgtl has carved its style and sound worldwide as one of amsterdams staple dance music institutions. this year the organisation is deepening its focus and vision. therefore dgtl is launching its own imprint dgtl records. the label builds on the festivals musical theme of an evocative cross section of the sounds and styles showcasing forward thinking, cutting edge artists. the one to kick off the new imprint will be the bulgarian hardware wizard kink. best known for his live performances, teemed with explosive energy, which for a consecutive year puts him to the no.1 spot of live acts on ra poll, he is also one of houses most in demand producers. kink has worked with dgtl for quite some time, including last years audiovisual installation transmission tower, where the first track neutrino was born. the melodic neutrino , kicks off with syncopating bassline. its interconnecting layers organically jump over and under each other, reflecting the organic character of kinks live performances, where every knob touch and turn matters. on the latter, he built the b-sider dynamo: i loaded my favourite element from neutrino in my computer and i tweaked the sound through various weird devices in my studio, till it sounded like a completely new track. as usual, he added a few endless loops on the record, for the adventurous djs, exclusively for the 12inch. the idea for the dgtl records artwork is to feature a different visual/graphic artist from the dgtl art program every year starting with the cover from tim buiting and his graphical visual of the liege train station, designed by calatrava for this years releases.

kevin arnemann and daan kemps taped artifact record label is prepping its first release of 2017. following the labels recently released various artists compilation, the amsterdam based imprint welcomes two pioneers within the icelandic techno scene: ohm & octal industries. ohm earned his stripes through his collaborations with exos in the early 00s, whilst octal industries is a much-respected artist within the idm scene under his ruxpin alias. with the highly dub-influenced maoss ep, the icelandic duo follows up their recent appearance on thors renowned thule records. the four-tracker features highly textured, rhythmical and classic rooted dub techno, showcasing the iconic icelandic aesthetic.

lessismore record label, founded in 2003 by the dutch dj and producer alexis tyrel together with mbc, has been home for mostly his own releases under all his monikers and various artist compilations. “return to planet alpha” continues in this tradition, being a second long-player of alexis tyrel after his debut “newtradition” from 2011.
“return to planet alpha” is a collection of elegant techno tracks which instead of following the now so popular dark and destructive path focuses on daily moods and airy atmosphere, which is closer to open air and lounge than to sweaty pits of contemporary rave. but that doesn’t mean that the twelve tracks are just indistinctive background music. for one thing, tyrel is a master of slick and tight beat foundations of kick drums and bass, often smoothed out with cool synth pads, onto which he layers all kinds of rhythmical chains, subtle melodic ideas and sounds ranging from vintage synths and industrial bits to organic textures and even field recordings.

lynn williams may not be someone you have heard of but her pedigree is strong. her father was hank ballard (of king and james brown fame) and her mother was 60s miami radio personality and dance group leader vanilla miss boom boom williams. lynn cut 5 excellent 7inches for various henry stone owned miami labels in the 70s here we present her two most collectable. the first it takes two is a smokey deepfunk killer. on the flip dont be surprised is one of miamis best ever deep soul records period, a dark serious ballad pulled off with amazing emotion considering her young years at the time of recording.

promos, edits, mega-mixes, the record pools, white labels, acetates, reel to reels. all of the above were the weapons of choice for the disc jockey s of yesteryear, utilising these tools helped various luminaries pave the way for where we are today on the modern dance-floor. those secret mixes, private versions and edits of the hottest disco jams that only the select few had access to could make or break a dj s reputation in the clubs and on the streets. it is within this world that the for discos only label operates, sourcing the finest underground edits and mixes for the discotheques. we carefully hand pick and dig for obscure or forgotten versions of the best tracks that may have been previously out of reach for the majority, inviting the hottest editors and mixers to open up their archives and share their secret weapons with us all via the medium of the 12- record.

there’s not a lot to tell about the project glow in the dark by a certain harry miller. only perhaps we can state that with these eight tracks at hand harry miller accomplished probably the most enchanting album of the still quite young year. just when we wanted to dismiss the short-dated genre of chillwave wistfully, “future bliss” comes along with a bewitching sound hailing from an optimistic but cranky future. already the opening track “step one” with its vocal samples and its spoken word intro is futuristic soul full of affirmation of life pillowed on a synth bedding smoothed to the max up to its edges. but also the following seven tracks spread infectious positive vibes all around. the magic of glow in the dark’s tracks is energized mostly by miller’s delicate way of treating his various samples, a wary manner one usually only shows when picking up a guitar. and unlike sample based music feeding from hiphop his tracks are completely free from any sort of nostalgia, because all of his songs are designed for the future through and through. “future bliss” is one hell of a joy ride, from the first note to the last tone. the neon funk of “1987”, the broken beat of “7 billion = 1”, the synth pop of “the last dance” and in general, all of the eight tracks could be little, but great hymns on their own. but only in its entirety they sparkle this fathomless ingeniousness hidden in glow in the dark. in the end it seems to be wiser that one has as little background information as possible to be able to lose oneself fully in this “future bliss”.

in today’s increasingly barren rock and roll landscape, ulan bator stand as beacons of explorative songwriting. formed in paris in 1993 by amaury cambuzat (vocals, guitar and keyboards) and olivier manchion (bass), the band’s atmospheric approach to composition has consistently yielded guitar-driven avant-rock at once hypnotic and untamed. and while their sound has developed in a variety of directions – often in relationship to changing line-ups and various collaborations, including with krautrock legends faust and swans michael gira – ulan bator’s resist simple categorization: kraut-y repetition, post-rock guitar flourishes, kosmische synth work, intimate whispering and pounding drums have all taken an audible lead throughout their now twenty-year career.

rico puestel is in charge for our cocoon recordings 144th release. rico is an producer animal who released more than 100 tracks & remixes since 2005 under various project names such as dinamoe, central scrutinizer and of course under his main moniker rico puestel. the enormous amount of productions shaped ricos knowledge and taste and his new cocoon release neyst and enokid seems to be the logical result of his long journey through the techno-universe. puestels style is very unique and merges elements of dark and hypnotic mainfloor techno as well as orchestral sounds and even industrial elements. neyst is the perfect hypnotic and dark techno circle that keeps on progressing and building up into sheer madness. no fast food, no leightweight, this is heavy techno business! enokid comes with a little more of a chicago house vibe however it is again still deep in puestels very own style. we especially fancy the crazy break in the middle with the spaced out room effect part and the melody coming in after the break. as stompy and musclepacked this track is, it still seems to be very musical and deep at the same time - what a trip! this one demands a good and proper sound system, well what other cocoon release doesnt?

second release comes from berlin based b.e.f., soaking you into a deep journey of the now. a repetetive meditation - forward pushing and hypnotising. b.e.f. has been a steady part of parallel berlin since a few years, so it s a logical next step to release his debut solo ep on our label. he has been releasing under different monikers, which have been subjected to quite a lot of variations. he meanwhile found a coherent foundation of a rough, hypnotic and gritty sound. coming along with the process of discovering the most genuine way of expression, he focused on analogue gear. “waveforms are not only a mathematical law, waveforms are everywhere, in all sections of everyday life, in light and in sound. parallel is one of the many parallel universes out there, living and believing in variety, whilst pointing onto respect for various life forms. we do what we love”.

massimiliano pagliara debuts on ostgut ton with his new ep, time and again. born and raised in the deep south of italy massimiliano pagliara made his way to berlin in 2001, quickly diving headfirst into the german capital’s club scene (particularly berghain’s predecessor club, ostgut) until he started djing in 2003. by the time of his joining with ostgut booking agency in october 2015 massi had already constantly delivered – the dj and producer has left a strong mark on house music throughout the years with energetic, playful and deep sets behind the decks, two acclaimed solo albums on live at robert johnson and various collaboration projects. his residency at panorama bar therefore was a no-brainer – but the musical link by one of house music’s finest with the club’s label was still missing. now massi steps up with four new tracks and his first release on ostgut ton.
